Durban is one of South Africa’s biggest and busiest metropolises. It certainly doesn’t disappoint in terms of fantastic spots for freelancers to make themselves comfortable with a hot cuppa or a fab meal. And, of course, free Wi-Fi.
Freelancing or working from home are awesome alternatives to being office-bound. But, cabin fever is very real. After weeks of sitting at the same desk and wearing the same path in our carpet between the study and the kitchen, it becomes crucial that we get out of the house. Urgent, even. And, when deadlines loom and accounts need to be paid, our work has to come with us.
Durban, in KwaZulu-Natal, is brimming with fab restaurants and coffee shops; where busy freelancers can get work done while enjoying a completely different vibe. As a writer, I find that this white noise sometimes inspires me far more than staring out of my sliding doors in complete silence.
So, here are some great places to enjoy good food, great coffee, and FREE Wi-Fi:
Glenwood Bakery (Berea)
This bakery is famous for its artisanal bread, excellent coffee, freshly-squeezed orange juice, and gourmet sandwiches. They also make their own ice-creams (grapefruit sorbet, salted caramel, ginger are just some of the delectable flavours on offer).
Circus Circus (Musgrave)
With a varied menu of irresistible breakfasts, lunches, dinners, and snacks; Circus Circus is a hotspot for creatives to settle down and get to work. It is in the cosmopolitan hub of Musgrave in Berea, making it central and accessible.
As part of the KZN Society of Arts, this cafe celebrates all things creative (and knows that true creativity comes from caffeine and free Wi-Fi). It has a massive menu and meals are very reasonably priced.
Parc. Cafe (Glenwood)
This restaurant has a stunning menu with plenty of delectable breakfast, lunch, and light meal options. It’s also licensed, for those who want to round off a day of work with a cold beer or a glass of wine. I, personally, HAVE to try the avo milkshake.
Cafe Jiran (North Beach)
Perfectly perched on the Durban promenade, Cafe Jiran is known for its extraordinary range of teas and coffees, as well as its irresistible menu. Be inspired by the views of the ocean and the comings and goings of people on the promenade in this vibey spot.
This list of fabulous Durban spots with free Wi-Fi is by no means exhaustive. But, it gives freelancers a taster of what awesome options are available to those needing a little inspiration.
