We got back from a week’s break in Cape Town and I was prepared to hit the ground running this week. I had blogs to write, quotes to send, recipes to edit, and proposals to generate. I also had my kid’s school assessments, an appointment with the hairdresser, and a fitness regime I thought I’d start in time for summer. Enter: Tuesday morning and a noonday forecast of 40 degrees Celsius. Most of you don’t know me personally, but I do NOT function well in the heat. I melt. I resemble a massive variety of drowned rodents. I panic. I flake. I die 1000 deaths. Also, I’m totally not dramatic at all. So, I was rendered unable to sit in my office to work. We dropped the kid at school, loaded the stand-up paddle boards, and headed to the beach. Along with my SUP, paddle, and wetsuit, I packed my iPad.
And this really is the story of my life. I often get to do what I want when I want to, without neglecting clients or missing important emails. This is part of what motivated me to leave corporate, where I stared at Facebook on quiet days rather than being able to go for a cycle, and I just didn’t get it. I couldn’t go on like that. It made me want to do bad things to good people.
Since I went on my own (almost 10 years ago now), I’ve loved every minute of the control and freedom that I get to enjoy. I think everyone that has the desire to work 1) for themselves or 2) remotely should go for it. And it makes sense for a business to encourage remote offices. They cut their expenses, reduce the issues around road traffic and congestions, and have happier employees.
